Rafflesia

rafflesia.jpg (15680 bytes) There are several species of Rafflesia and Rafflesia cantleyi is one of them. This parasitic plant is rare and extraordinary in that it grows out of a particular creeper on the forest floor. The Rafflesia sometimes measures three feet in diameter from petal to petal; hence justifying its entry in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest flower in the world. Indigenous forest communities have claimed that it could be used to hasten delivery at childbirth. Traditional midwives have also used it for cleansing the womb after childbirth as well as for regaining the abdominal shape.
