Kenanga
![]() |
Known as Kenanga in Malaysia, this rather droopy-looking tree grows to a height of about 30 metres. To the world at large it is better known as Ylang-ylang from which essential oil is obtained and often included as an ingredient to create some of the most well-known expensive and exotic perfumes. The oil is extracted from the fragrant yellow-green flowers which hang in clusters. The various parts of the tree have been traditionally sought by villagers, in the Southeast Asian regions, to treat minor ailments. A paste of the fresh flowers is prescribed to treat asthma. The leaves can be rubbed on the skin to relieve itchiness, the bark to treat scabies and the seeds, when finely ground and mixed with other ingredients, used to treat stomach disorder. |
