The famous 14th century Moroccan traveller, Ibn Batuta, called this species the Jave Frankincense, according it a value similar to the Frankincense of biblical times. The antiseptic properties of the resin from Styrax benzoin, known as Kemenyan in Malaysia, have been recognised over centuries, both in the East as well as the West. Tinctures of benzoin derived from this resin are used as preservatives in a wide range of medicinal and cosmetic preparations. Benzoic acid obtained from this tree is imported by China where the bitter and pungent drug is prescribed for treatment of stroke, fainting spells and heart problems. The Chinese believe the drug improves physiological functions of the body. Resin from the heavily buttressed, tall tree, is only obtained after bruising the bark and collecting the resin a few days later. In Malaysia, the benzoin resin which gives off a very pleasant, sweet fragrance when burnt, is used as an incense in religious functions of Muslims, Hindus and Christians. |
